 Space Command activation ceremony – 1 September 1982. In 1985, Space Command was redesignated Air Force Space Command. During the activation ceremony for Space Command, General Hartinger declared his pride at having been selected its first commander and stated, “…establishment of the Space Command is a crucial milestone in the evolution of military space operations. Space is a place – like land, and sea and air – a theatre of operations, and it was just a matter of time until space was treated as such.” Under Secretary of the Air Force Edward C.  2004, Capts Melissa Ruff and Todd Benson sit in a missile trainer at F.E. Warren Air Force Base. Ruff went on to serve almost 14 years as a Space operator and continues to serve as a civilian Guardian in Space Operations Command in theCombat Power Directorate.  Soldiers operate the small lightweight GPS receiver (SLGR) during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The receiver, which facilitated GPS navigation in the open desert, along with other space-based capabilities such as missile warning, space-based imagery and satellite communications played a major role in enabling the success of U.S. and coalition forces during 100 hours of sustained combat.
