Japan Air Self Defense Force Col Hiroyuki Ishii, Space Operations Group commander, visited Guardians at the Space Operations Command’s 20th Space Surveillance Squadron Site C-6 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., on June 26, 2025.

Lt. Gen. David N. Miller, Jr., commander of SpOC, hosted the visit to the geographically separated unit of Mission Delta 2, which is responsible for operation of the Eglin Phased Array Radar and operation of the Space Fence Phased Array Radar operated out of the Pacific region. Combined, the two radars track more than 26,000 Near‐Earth and Deep‐Space objects.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to host Col Hiroyuki Ishii to our site,” said Miller. “After our visit to the Indo-Pacific earlier this year, this reciprocal opportunity emphasizes the importance of leveraging the strengths of both nations to further develop integrated space operations.”

The JASDF’s Space Operations Group, headquartered in Fuchu Air Base, Tokyo, is responsible for the JASDF’s space domain awareness capability, integrating surveillance data as well as conducting satellite jamming detection for military SATCOM users.

“We extended our sincere appreciation to Lieutenant General Miller for graciously inviting us to Eglin Air Force Base,” said Japan Air Self-Defense Force Col. Hiroyuki Ishii. “The 20th Space Surveillance Squadron shares similar capability with the 1st Space Operations Squadron of Space Operations Group, and this opportunity greatly contributed to deepening our mutual understanding. Ensuring the stable use and superiority of space requires indispensable coordination with allied and partner nations. It is essential to continue collaboration at all levels, from operational coordination on the ground to high level exchanges.”
