The 8th Training Squadron of Delta 8 cinched the 2024 Schriever Commander’s Cup for excellence and participation in intramural sports and fitness activities here.

The trophy is an incentive program designed to encourage personnel on Schriever SFB to participate in a variety of fitness, aerobic, recreational, and health risk avoidance activities. The program includes intramural sports and a quarterly event, awarding points for unit participation and placing in events.

“I’m super proud of the team for what they accomplished over 2024,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Zachery B. Leonard, 8th TS commander. “The competition was close, but the 8th remained engaged throughout the year and continues to help grow warfighters to achieve Delta 8’s number 1 priority of combat readiness.”

Events in the commander’s cup included a wide range of sports including flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball, disc golf, and long-distance runs.

Guardians continue to trial a service-specific holistic health approach to fitness, which consists of a continuous fitness assessment study and focuses on building long-term health outcomes for participants. According to a 2024 release, the HHA intends to increase short and long-term health outcomes for the force by meeting Guardians “where they are” and showing them what “right” looks like.  Those who do not opt-in to the study still adhere to U.S. Air Force physical fitness assessment standards. Either group sees the benefits of team exercise events to encourage fitness participation.

“I have really enjoyed my time within the 8th TS - We are like a family, attacking everything as a team with great deal of camaraderie which allows us to be resilient in losses which ultimately leads us to winning in the future,” said Sergeant Daryl Griffin, 8 TS staff instructor. “Winning the Commander’s Cup means a lot because I know we did this as a team, and I’m happy to be a part of such a caring squadron that can and will compete in any aspect of life.”

“I am very proud of my Guardians for volunteering to challenge themselves while forging connections with units outside of ours,” said Master Sgt. Jeremy Twomey, 8 TS operations superintendent. “Healthy competition reinforces our culture of excellence and winning attitude. When you give personnel the chance to engage in team activities it forges stronger bonds and commitment to their mission. This also strengthens ties to outside units that people otherwise would not have collaborated with.”
