ONE GUARDIAN: Guardian Finds Inspiration in Defensive Cyber Operations Published Sept. 17, 2024 By John Ayre SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. -- U.S. Space Force Sgt. Jonathan Gray serves as a cyber planner and threat hunter with Space Delta 6, 69th Cyberspace Squadron, located at Schriever Space Force Base, Colo. In his current role, Gray's job involves planning and running cyber missions, assigning tasks to teams, and overseeing the whole defensive cyber operations process from prep to debrief. He also gathers feedback to improve future missions and updates leadership on strategies and progress. His efforts are in support of 69 CYS’s mission to conduct defensive cyberspace operations enabling operations in support of Space Delta 6's Satellite Control Network at various locations around the world. “Defending the space domain and our assets are imperative for the continued operation in space and protecting U.S. interests in space,” said Gray. “I am constantly around high-speed and intelligent Guardians that allow for plentiful opportunities to learn and grow from them, which is something I am very thankful for and motivates me to be better”. Gray and his 69 CYS team are currently in the “commit” phase of the Space Force Generation model, carrying out defensive cyber capabilities, protecting the Satellite Control Network and the capabilities of our mission partners. Their efforts allow the Space Force and other organizations to achieve assured access to space, to include reliable satellite communications and command and control capabilities. “With the introduction of SPAFORGEN, overall operationalization has changed the way missions are completed and how we rely on our mission partners more closely,” explained Gray. “The integration of intel, cyber, and space makes for a cohesive dynamic, providing increased teamwork and improving overall mission readiness.” Since its activation a five years ago, the Space Force has continuously evolved to build and refine strategies for improving and operating to the full extent possible. Gray’s prior experience in the U.S. Air Force provides a unique perspective to the Space Force’s progression. “The implementation of SPAGORGEN is a perfect example of evolving to become a force envisioned for success,” said Gray. “Even though I have only been in the Space Force for a year, the shaping and development of guardians to be utilized as capable warfighters is constantly being worked.” Gray’s military service began with the USSF in 2020 where he served for 3 years in enterprise communications until he transitioned to the Space Force as an inter-service transfer in 2023. His number one reason for transferring was the opportunity work in defensive cyber operations. Gray’s journey into military service was inspired heavily by his family’s service. According to Gray, “I credit my parents for being so supportive and encouraging throughout my life. My dad has been my role model, as he has served 30 years in the Army and is someone I aspire to be like.”
