On this edition of Down to Earth, we’re checking in with SBD 1 to meet U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Luis Peralta, from the 21st Communications Squadron.

Peralta, originally hailing from the Leeward-side of Hawaii, wears many hats as he currently serves as NCOIC of General Officer Communications, leads a team of four Guardians providing direct cyber support to the commander, Space Operations Command, seven general officers, seven Senior Executive Services leaders, and 135 executive and staff personnel.

Peralta not only finds fulfillment in becoming a mentor for others around him, but he also enjoys taking every opportunity to be the mentee, regardless of the rank or service of the military member.

“Each and every interaction I’ve had since serving has rooted my purpose to serve others”, said Peralta.

Peralta feels it is important to emphasize the idea of being yourself.

“We all come from different walks of life”, said Peralta. However, that doesn’t justify treating anyone unequally; especially when there is an opportunity to help someone else grow in any given area.

Peralta also values taking chances as he quotes the popular Wayne Gretski saying, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

It is exciting to see the growth that anyone can have on any journey and to be able to look back and see the progress that was made.

Peralta’s forward thinking, optimism and positive attitude not only applies to his work ethic but also his views on change, specifically the way that diversity, inclusion and equity are highlighted.

“I feel as though others will be given a spark of hope or inspired with the slightest bit of support,” said Peralta. “While I never hid who I was, I saw the efforts some of my friends took to conceal their authentic identity.

Peralta happily puts on his uniform as a continual reminder of the change that has been made and the change he hopes to see in the nation.
